CHURCH MISSION TRIP DRAWS FROM MANY GENERATIONS TO HELP HURRICANE VICTIMS

SCHAUMBURG -- The youngest will be freshmen in high school. The oldest will be 78. With many other ages in between, they will all be part of a 42-member local church group headed to Asheville, N.C. later this month to help repair homes damaged by hurricanes in 2004.

35 of the participants are affiliated with Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 930 W. Higgins Road, Schaumburg; the other 7 are affiliated with the Lutheran Church of the Master in Carol Stream.

The trip runs from July 30 to Aug. 7. Bringing all those volunteers with tools is a major undertaking. The trip will cost about $14,000. The group will be renting 6 vans to transport people and tools.

Those who are going on the trip have been planning for several months. Pancake breakfasts and car washes have helped to pay for the trip, but participants also contribute some money from their own pocket.

Participants who have gone in the past say the trip is rewarding. "I like to go because we are serving God," said Prince of Peace member Mark Gamb, who has gone on several mission trips in the past. Karen Wagner, Director of Youth and Family Ministries at the church, is leading the trip, with Gamb's help. Gamb said being able to help people whose homes were either fully or partially destroyed can be spiritually uplifting. "Most people go because they want to make a difference for others," Gamb said.

In North Carolina, the group will stay at a Bible camp and travel daily to either Canton or Clyde, two small towns near Asheville that were hit hard by last year's hurricanes. The trip is a part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America's Disaster Response effort, which offers help to disaster victims around the world.

Some mission trip participants will offer a report on the trip at a church service at Prince of Peace after they return. This report is tentatively scheduled for Aug. 28.
